<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">According to studies on this
subject of boredom – students’ boredom can be linked to Stress.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">Here are a couple of quotes:<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<li class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;"><span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">My
favorite, “By definition, to be in a state of boredom is to say the world
sucks out there in some way. But
often that’s not the case; often it’s an interior problem, and students
are looking in the wrong place to solve the problem.”<o:p></o:p></span></li>
</ol>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">What’s wrong with those
quotes? You’ll notice that they are all

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">It’s all too common that a

Arthur Levine<br />
Education Week May 7, 2013<br />
<br />
I felt compelled to share this post by Arthur Levine in Education Week.<br />
<br />
Mr. Levine really hit the nail on the head when he stated, " <span style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 24px;">Industrial societies focus on common processes, epitomized by the assembly line.</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 24px;"> </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 24px;">information economies focus on common outcomes. Process is variable. With regard to schools, the emphasis is on learning;"</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 24px;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 24px;">"</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 24px;">the shift to an information economy and a focus on learning is inevitable. Teachers' unions can oppose it or lead the transition."</span><br />

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Book Antiqua","serif"; font-size: 8pt; letter-spacing: 0.15pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-font-kerning: 18.0pt;">Laura Thomas</span><span style="font-family: "Book Antiqua","serif"; font-size: 8pt;"><o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Book Antiqua","serif"; letter-spacing: 0.15pt;">Since the Common Core State Standards emerged, people I
respect have come out in opposition in a way that reminds me of a book from my
childhood: <a href="http://store.sesamestreet.org/Product.aspx?cp=21415_21457_21472&pc=6EAM0203"><em><b><span style="font-family: "Book Antiqua","serif";"><span style="color: #336699;">The Monster at the End of This Book</span></span></b></em></a>.
In this classic, Sesame Street’s Grover begs us not to turn the pages, lest we
unleash the monster at the end. He becomes increasingly agitated, building
walls and threatening us as we get closer to the end. His panic sounds a lot
like what I hear from some of my colleagues in the educational community.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Book Antiqua","serif"; letter-spacing: 0.15pt;">I think that, if we're as smart and committed as we say
we are, we can use the common core as a stepping stone to better outcomes for
all of our kids. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>And by
"outcomes" I don't mean just "test scores." I mean, you
know, Learning. Engagement. Success. . . . but also the <a href="https://docs.google.com/a/antioch.edu/document/d/1oGdSlE87slOSTNO39GFkyrvKQ3zW7j_0PJLZgQyEfQA/edit"><b><span style="color: #336699;">skills
and dispositions</span></b></a> that kids need to succeed in life, like communication,
collaboration, curiosity, organization, and problem solving.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Book Antiqua","serif"; letter-spacing: 0.15pt;">What we should be celebrating as an opportunity, we're
dreading. We've been buried under "teach to the test" and doing the
heavy lifting in our classrooms for so many years that we’ve forgotten a basic
premise of education: <u>The learner does the learning.<o:p></o:p></u></span></div>

strategic expertise over rote computation, some say the transition to the new
framework poses daunting challenges for students who are already behind in
math.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Lucida Bright', serif; letter-spacing: 0.15pt;">News
came down about the indictment of the former Atlanta schools chief Beverly Hall
and 35 other current and former officials for their alleged roles in a massive
cheating scandal that has rocked the city for the past three years. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Lucida Bright","serif";">There is nothing good
to say about cheating on tests. However,
some of the reactions to the scandal have been surprising. The most troubling response comes from people
opposed to standardized testing generally and to current federal policy
specifically. They somewhat gleefully
use this sorry episode as the ultimate smoking gun, the perfect we-told-you-so
case that clinches their claims about the evils of testing, and the entire
reform movement.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Lucida Bright","serif";">William Ayers, an
education professor emeritus from the University of Illinois at Chicago,
posted, “the Atlanta story proves that teaching toward a simple standardized
measure and relentlessly applying state-administered tests to determine the
outcome both incentivizes cheating and is a worthless proxy for learning. The road to the massive cheating scandal in
Atlanta runs right through the White House.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Lucida Bright","serif";">Mr. Feuer has several
problems with that logic.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Lucida Bright', serif; letter-spacing: 0.15pt;">First, shifting the blame for egregious mischief away
from the perpetrators and onto the system strikes me as morally and politically
bankrupt. Here’s an analogy to consider: Do we react to the worst instances of
tax evasion by condemning the concept of taxation rather than by prosecuting
the evaders? I assume that Mr. Ayers would not call for abolition of the
graduated income tax as a way to finance public goods and redistribute wealth
just because the system has its imperfections and because some people lie on
their tax returns. Shall we excuse individual or group criminality because
certain social institutions create pressures for greed and misconduct? Banking
executives accused of fraud will be delighted.</span><span style="font-family: "Lucida Bright","serif";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Lucida Bright', serif; letter-spacing: 0.15pt;">Second,
pinning the responsibility for the Atlanta disaster on the White House is an
extravagant example of misdirected blame. Maybe current federal policies lead
to unwanted outcomes, such as narrowing of the curriculum and teaching to the
test, but that’s a far cry from the outright fraud of the sort listed in the
Atlanta indictment. In any case, there’s
no evidence that federal policy causes cheating, or that “cheating is
inevitable.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Lucida Bright', serif; letter-spacing: 0.15pt;">Third,
indicting testing, rather than cheating, undermines the possibility for reform
in the design and uses of tests.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Lucida Bright', serif; letter-spacing: 0.15pt;">What’s often ignored in the popular frenzy against
testing is that tests can help gauge individual learning, give teachers
additional information about their students’ progress, provide objective
indicators of student achievement, and expose inequalities in the allocation of
educational resources.</span><span style="font-family: "Lucida Bright","serif";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times,serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 140%; margin: 0px;">
NEA president Dennis Van Roekel appeared on PBS Newshour in the wake of the Indiana Supreme Court decision to debate “<a href="http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/education/jan-june13/vouchers_04-01.html" target="_blank">Should Public Money Be Used for Private Schools?</a>”<br />
It went routinely along the lines of the usual talking points, until the end, when Van Roekel was asked:<br />
<blockquote>
All right, Dennis, what about the idea that we have this system where G.I. Bills, Pell Grants, and for post-secondary education, we’re taking taxpayer money and distributing it through people to whatever school that they’re interested in? Why is it so different for primary and high school education and kindergarten?</blockquote>
To which he replied:<br />
<blockquote>
I think post-secondary education, college and university, I think you have to put that into a different category than K-12 education, because then you’re choosing between a career or college and specialized training. That definitely makes sense. But for young children, they shouldn’t have to be bussed somewhere. It should be in their neighborhood.</blockquote>
Van Roekel then went on for a few sentences about teachers teaching out of their area of expertise and how he was a math teacher – which means he is very familiar with tangents.<br />
I’m sure Van Roekel is aware that an awful lot of K-12 public school students are riding the bus to school right now, particularly since his union represents tens of thousands of school bus drivers. So let’s play that popular game “What He Really Meant Was…”<br />
You can start off by saying “What He Really Meant Was… neighborhood public schools should be improved so parents won’t have to send their kids to a voucher school out of their neighborhood.” Then I’ll say, “What He Really Meant Was… we should have voucher schools in every neighborhood.”<br />
It’s fun! See how many interpretations you can come up with.<br />

<b><span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">Your
Child Lags Behind in Reading Skills – What To Do<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">I recently read a post from a
concerned homeschooling parent. They
were concerned that their son, who is their fourth child, was not yet reading
at age 7. He/She was wondering if they
needed to perform an intervention or wait for him to grow into it.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">One response to this post was
“What if your child is the same age as you other children were when they were
eagerly reading, but is either not interested in learning to read, or is having
great difficulty learning to read? Do
you panic? Do you have this child
tested? Do you wait? Will the reading
just ‘click’ at some point if you wait long enough? How does a mother know if this is a ‘maturity
issue’ or if this difficulty is a sign of a learning disability?” This person then went on to recommend some
curriculum.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">I, on the other hand, have a
different view on this. Since the child
has little interest in learning to read I would ask: what subject is the child
greatly interested in? Once that is known
I would then show the child how learning to read can help them in learning more
and doing more in the subject they really enjoy.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">The child has not been shown
the Purpose & Value of learning to read.
This is one of the prime Barriers to Learning and one that is tripped
over continuously.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

value and relevance to them of learning to read, I would bet that child begins
devouring books.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<b>Learning From

<i>“Why Wrong Is Not
Always Bad”</i> by Alina Tugend appeared in Education Week. In it she wrote, “What I’m talking about is
how so many of our children are taught, covertly, or overtly, that mistakes are
something to be avoided at all costs, that there is only one right answer and
if you don’t know it, well, you’re a failure.”<o:p></o:p></div>

The Montessori Method has a whole different approach to
mistakes or errors. Montessori material
is designed to be self-correcting, that’s one of the advantages of the
Montessori Method.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Materials, or work, are created so that if the student makes
a mistake they will realize it on their own, sometimes only at the end when a
piece is leftover. But the student has
the opportunity to repeat the work and discover their mistake on their own, and
to learn the correct way to do the work.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
By discovering their mistake and correcting themselves, they
are learning the underlying principle contained in that work. This is a much more fruitful, holographic and
lasting method of absorbing knowledge.
This makes the student the source of their own learning. They are in charge of uncovering and
discovering the knowledge they seek.<o:p></o:p></div>

“We come to a scientific principle which is also a path to
perfection. We call it “the control of
error.” Whatever is done in school, by
teachers, children or others, there are bound to be mistakes. So we need this rule as a part of school
life: namely, that what matters is not so much correction in itself as that
each individual should become aware of his own errors. Each should have a means of checking, so that
he can tell if he is right or not.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“One of the first exercises done by our children is that
with a set of cylinders of equal height but varying diameter, which fit into
corresponding sockets in a block of wood.
The child begins fitting them one at a time into their sockets, but
finds when she comes to the end that she has made a mistake. One cylinder is left which is too large for
the only remaining hole, while some of the others fit too loosely. The child looks again and studies them all
more closely. She is now faced with a
problem. There is that cylinder left
over, which shows that she has made a mistake.
It is just this that adds interest to the game and makes her repeat it
time after time.”<o:p></o:p></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“The child might say, “I am not perfect, I am not
omnipotent, but this much I can do and I know it. I also know that I can make mistakes and
correct myself, thus finding my way.” If
in the daily routine of school we always arrange for errors to become
perceptible, this is to place us on a path to perfection.”<o:p></o:p></div>

<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Purpose
& Value – Learning Barrier # One</span></b></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">From Education Week, December
11, 2012</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">U.S.
Math, Science Achievement Exceeds World Average<o:p></o:p></span></i></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">In a
finding that may come as little surprise, students across nations seem to lose
some enthusiasm for math as they get older. Nearly half (48 percent) of 4th
graders said they “like learning mathematics,” but that slipped to one-quarter
(26 percent) by the time they hit 8th grade. And at both levels<u>, that
attitude has a correlation with test scores. That is, the less students like
math, the lower their achievement, on average.<o:p></o:p></u></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">Another
troubling indicator is that, across the globe, students report a drop in
engagement with math lessons as they move from 4th to 8th grade. And <u>once
again, that level of engagement is correlated with a slip in average scores.</u>
The Engaged in Mathematics Lessons scale was based on responses to five
questions, including “I know what my teacher expects me to do,” and “I am
interested in what my teacher says.”<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">Meanwhile,
<u>many 4th graders around the world (69 percent) had math teachers who
reported making efforts to use instructional practices intended to interest
students</u> and reinforce learning, such as posing questions to elicit reasons
and explanations, and bringing interesting items to class. <u>At the 8th grade,
however, only 39 percent of students internationally reported that their
teachers frequently related lessons to their daily lives, </u>and just 18
percent said they had teachers who routinely brought interesting materials to
class.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Lucida Bright","serif";">This is a PERFECT example of
Learning Barrier # One – Purpose & Value.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Lucida Bright","serif";">Related to that, what is its
value?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>What is it good for?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>How can I use it in my life?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Lucida Bright","serif";">When a child doesn’t know the
purpose for the subject, and can’t see any use for it in their life, they’re
not going to pay attention and will probably do poorly in the subject, as is
cited in the study above.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Lucida Bright","serif";">The way to remedy this Learning Barrier
is to make sure your child understands why they need to learn a particular

flat. As educators look for ways to turn
that showing around, many schools are incorporating the softer, non-cognitive
skills into college-readiness efforts. The ability to solve problems and be
resourceful are viewed by some experts as being as important as mastering
mathematics and reading. Helping teenagers develop those skills is being
addressed in high schools, college-freshman orientation, youth-development
organizations, and parenting programs.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

The three basic principles of Peace Education are:</div>

respect the other person and collaborate constructively with them.</div>

Teachers should establish a special area in their classroom

<div class="MsoNormal">
An article in Education Week titled “<i>Studies Link Students’ Boredom to Stress</i>” October 9, 2012 talks
about possible reasons for students being bored in school.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“. . . the experience of boredom directly connects to a
student’s inability to focus attention.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Boredom is one of the most consistent experiences of school
and one that can be frustrating and disheartening for teachers.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you notice, they all seem to center on something being
wrong with the student.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We disagree! We think
every student wants to explore and learn about their world.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
One of the reasons a student can exhibit boredom is because
they’re in the last and final stage of the Three Stages of Student Decline.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Teachers and parents need to be aware of these Stages of
Decline so that they can recover their child/student before they decline too
far and are beyond reach.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It’s all too common that a child’s/student’s want to learn
and contribute is trampled on. Their
free will, sovereignty and right to choose are suppressed. The child/student is dominated, overwhelmed
and made subservient to their environment.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This trampling of free will produces the Three Stages of
Student Decline:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
1. Protest and rebellion – the child/student begins by
protesting and rebelling against this domination and overwhelm. If it continues, then,</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
2. Appeasement and passivity – the child/student will be
passive and try to make themselves liked by the teacher/parent. If the overwhelm and domination continues,
then,</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
3. Dejection and despondency (otherwise known as boredom)
sets in – the child/student gives up and abandons participating in any
activities, in any type of learning.
Their free will has been suppressed for so long that they simply give
up.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This can be reversed by allowing the student/child to
exercise their free will, their right to choose and their sovereignty.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Big Change in Gifted
& Talented Testing<o:p></o:p></b></div>

The test for entrance into <st1:city w:st="on">New York City</st1:city>’s gifted & talented program

Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) will become the major measuring stick by which
student will be assessed. This test
relies on abstract, spatial thinking and eliminates language, even in the
instructions.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’m glad to hear that NYC is embracing the idea that our
children can be intelligent in many ways.
Howard Gardiner’s work on multiple intelligences documents this. The NNAT may also help to show that children
who are dyslexic are not disabled or handicapped, but actually demonstrating a
higher form of intelligence.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But the point we must recognize and appreciate is that there
are many ways our children can be gifted.
Parents, too often, can be concerned that their child is not
academically gifted and fail to see that particular gifts their child has, and
then work to facilitate and strengthen those gifts.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As Francie Alexander, Chief Education Officer for Scholastic
Inc., said, “Children can demonstrate their various intelligences and gifts by
being socially gifted, athletically gifted, and/or artistically gifted. Being gifted is not restricted to math,
language and science.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Parents should focus on their child’s strengths and enhance
them, not fret over apparent “below expectation” levels of skill or
ability. Validating what the child does
well actually lifts all other aspects of the child’s endeavors. By stressing and fretting over the child’s
apparent lesser abilities only drags down the child’s confidence and self
esteem and damages their overall achievement.</div>
